Les Arbres à  Bleu

Commissioned by the National Museum of Mali, Bamako, in 2006, this installation is a metaphor for the way that blue indigo dyestuff comes from the green leaves of plants.  It consists of a number of symbolic tree totems which have been wrapped in Malian cotton cloth, dyed in indigo and patterned in different ways.  The tree totems are placed in a field strewn with indigo-dyed loofah sponges representing the fallen fruit of the trees.
